From 2012 to 2023, Dr. Goodwin-Groen was Managing Director of the Better Than Cash Alliance, a United Nations-based partnership of governments, companies, and international organizations that accelerates the transition from cash to responsible digital payments to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

Ruth’s leadership has ensured the Alliance is achieving its mission by blending excellent advocacy with rigorous technical advisory services, addressing members’ challenges according to their priorities, to drive action on frontier payment digitization issues. Recently the Alliance is addressing rapid digitization risks & challenges during COVID through the UN Principles for Responsible Digital Payments and campaigning for women’s financial equality, Reaching Financial Equality for Women. which Dr. Goodwin-Groen co-authored.

Formerly, Dr. Goodwin-Groen was the Australian Co-Chair of the G20 Global Partnership for Financial Inclusion and the Financial Services for the Poor Adviser at the Australian Agency for International Development. As a senior financial inclusion expert with her own consulting business, Dr. Goodwin-Groen advised organizations such as the World Bank Group and CGAP, German Technical Cooperation, Open Society, FinMark Trust, Women’s World Banking, and Cambridge University. Dr. Goodwin-Groen holds a Ph.D. from the University of Bath, UK, an M.B.A. (Distinction) from Harvard Business School, USA and a B.Sc. Hons. (First) from the University of Western Australia.
