The Better Than Cash Alliance’s 2019-2021 strategy cycle focused on the launch and scale of responsible digitization initiatives, powering the shift from cash to digital payments. Our 2021 Annual Report details the impressive achievements of Alliance members in their work with the Secretariat, to build responsible digital payment foundations for the Sustainable Development Goals.
Over the course of the 2019-2021 strategy cycle, the Secretariat launched 31 digitization initiatives in 12 markets, with 90 million people now on track for new digital payment accounts. Crucially, Alliance members continue to prioritize women, with 70% of initiatives focused on women and trending up.
Thirty new policies on responsible payment digitization were launched across government and corporate members. The Alliance also welcomed the governments of Equatorial Guinea, Sudan, and Uganda as new members, as well as the Ethical Tea Partnership, The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Labour Organization (ILO), Inditex, Marks and Spencer, the UN’s Children Fund (UNICEF) and UN Women.
This annual report also revisits ambitious global initiatives launched in 2021, notably Reaching Financial Equality for Women and the UN Principles for Responsible Digital Payments.
