How to accelerate global payment acceptance

A new policy paper by Visa explores how countries encourage consumers, businesses and governments to accept and use electronic and digital payments. The biggest obstacle to accelerating the shift toward electronic payments is often the lack of an appropriate acceptance infrastructure, such as advanced telecommunications capabilities and payment terminals. Visa assessed several common policy measures to help clarify which policies may be best suited to speed the adoption of electronic payments. The report finds that infrastructure is one of the most critical parts of delivering electronic payments and also remains woefully lacking. At present about 43 percent of all consumer payments are made with cash.
